This Lagoon is the only freshwater lagoon in CA. & its 350 acres is home to dozens of varieties of migrant & resident waterfowl. Designated an Ecological Reserve by the California Fish & Game, the Buena Vista Lagoon is the home of the Buena Vista Audubon Society which operates a small but very informative Nature Center on the north edge of the lagoon. Two trails near the Nature Center offer many opportunities to see the lagoon inhabitants. Picnic facilities are also available.

BVAS conducts a monthly lagoon bird count on the fourth Saturday of each month. All members are urged to participate in this activity, which affords a perfect opportunity to explore this beautiful natural area and learn more about its inhabitants. Between 40 and 60 bird species are regularly observed on these counts.

The Aviara trail system is one of the most diverse trail systems in the city offering a variety of nature experiences to trail users. The names of the various trails reflect a specific characteristic unique to that particular trail. All trails are unpaved. Some have steep or narrow sections.

Golf View Trail
This trail is not a long trail but has beautiful views of the Aviara golf course and a water feature with seasonal flowers and water fowl. Access is located at Ambrosia Lane. The trail has a few steep climbs that give challenge to trail hikers and also has commanding views of the golf course, eucalyptus trees and chapparral.

Black Sage Trail
This trail gets its name from the native sage plant found in much of the coastal sage scrub that is along the trail and growing in the canyons adjacent to it. This trail can be accessed off of Aviara Parkway or Docena Road and offers commanding views to the east of San Marcos, to the south of Encinitas, and the hills beyond as far as Black Mountain.

Salt Marsh Trail
This trail is located in low-lying areas of the Aviara residential community and terminates at the south end of the trail with a viewpoint at the east end of the Batiquitos Lagoon slopes. Much of the vegetation along the trail consists of shrubs and flowers that are indicative of salt marsh areas of the watershed that lead out to the lagoon.

Eucalyptus Trail
As the name suggests, there are many groves of eucalyptus trees to walk through on this trail. At 1.2 miles, this is one of the longer trails in the Aviara trail system and offers a variety of steep topography as well, with high points that offer breathtaking views of the Batiquitos Lagoon and ocean beyond.

Lagoon Trail
The Lagoon trail is the most well-known trail of the area and provides a wonderful nature experience being so close to the water and the Aviara golf course. Egrets, raptors, herons, and many other water fowl and migrating birds call this home in the winter months. Hikers won’t be disappointed when they see these magnificent birds in their natural environment. This trail is approximately 2.13 miles in length and parallels the lagoon’s north shore. This trail is not as topographically challenging for many trail users and also offers an interpretive learning experience for all ages with signage placed along the trail about the flora and avian wildlife of the lagoon.

Distance: 6 miles
Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult
Terrain: Unpaved, Flat to Hilly

Parking is available at the Aviara Community Park or the Aviara Oaks Elementary School.

Agua Hedionda Lagoon sometimes referred to as Carlsbad Lagoon, is a saltwater wetland and watershed and offers year-round recreational and commercial use. The lagoon includes mud flats, salt, and freshwater marsh, and deep water and is actually comprised of three lagoons: a 66-acre outer lagoon, a 27-acre middle lagoon, and 293-acre inner lagoon.

It has facilities for boating, skiing, wakeboarding, sailing, windsurfing, and fishing. The Carlsbad lagoon is home to Hubbs/Sea World White Sea Bass Hatchery and Carlsbad Aquafarm, a commercial mussel-farming operation. Kayaking the lagoon is a popular activity and is best at high tide when numerous streams appear bringing a multitude of birds and wildlife.

The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Discovery Center is a nature center dedicated to environmental education and outreach. We are located on the eastern end of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon estuary and wetland area in Carlsbad. The 3,800 square foot building was completed in October 2004 and began hosting public programs and outreach activities in 2005.

Owned and operated by the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation, the Discovery Center houses exhibits and displays which pertain to historical and environmental aspects of the Lagoon. In addition, the Discovery Center hosts numerous festivals, lectures, seminars, and programs throughout the year.

Located in north Carlsbad, this trail is one of the most extensive in the citywide trail system. It winds through a huge grove of mature eucalyptus trees planted many years ago for the railroad industry with the intention for the wood to be used in the construction of rail lines. However, it was determined that the wood was inferior to other varieties and not harvested for that purpose. Years later the city acquired the property and it is now enjoyed by hikers, picnickers, and nature enthusiasts seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. The unpaved trail does climb to more than 100 feet in elevation and offers great views of the adjacent Buena Vista Lagoon and the Pacific Ocean.

Terrain: Unpaved, hilly, up to 100ft. difference in elevation
Distance: 3.0 miles
Difficulty: Moderate and difficult

Directions and Parking: I-5 to Las Flores exit, West on Las Flores to Jefferson Street, Right on Jefferson Street, Continue for about 1/2 mile and the Hosp Grove paking lot entrance will be on the right.
