Earth Day is one-of-a-kind. It’s where we get to celebrate our beautiful planet and take action to protect it for generations to come. The global movement that started in 1970 now inspires people to reflect and take steps to reduce our carbon footprint, conserve natural resources and promote sustainable living.

If you’re in Carlsbad during Earth Day, you’re in for a treat! There are so many great Earth Day events happening, and you won’t want to miss out on any of them.

Earth Day - Saturday, April 22 Carlsbad CA

To start with, mark your calendars for Saturday, April 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. because the bi-annual Makers Market is back for its seventh year. This event is the perfect blend of creativity, community and good vibes. It has a new location in downtown Carlsbad on Carlsbad Village Drive and Roosevelt Street, making it a great spot to stop for brunch or a lunch date. If you visit the Maker’s Market this year, get ready to browse and shop handmade, vintage, up-cycled and unique goods from southern Californian artisans.

This year, the Makers Market is showcasing eco-friendly makers who are dedicated to promoting and encouraging eco-responsible practices, from upcycling to sustainable packaging and zero-plastic packaging. By visiting their booths and indulging in their eco-friendly products, you’ll be doing your part to support sustainable agriculture and farming.

In addition to the Makers Market, Carlsbad Village Clean-Ups are an initiative that prioritizes the purposes of Earth Day all year round. Village cleanups engage the community as well as partner organizations like Pure Project and Handel’s Ice Cream. Over 1,000 pounds of trash were collected in 2022, and the goal is to continue the effort to keep Carlsbad Village litter-free. In 2023, cleanups will continue bi-monthly, and efforts will focus on collecting one of the city’s biggest litter problems – cigarette butts.

On Earth Day, the group will be leading a designated I Love A Clean San Diego cleanup site for an opportunity to reach into the far ends of the Village. This cleanup will be one of two larger community cleanups happening in 2023 in partnership with the Richness of Giving. This cleanup, Creek to Bay, will be hosted by Engel & Volkers. Guests can join together with thousands of volunteers countywide to clean-up litter.

Finally, starting at 12 p.m., the Carlsbad Music Festival will be hosting its Spring Eclectic Lawn at St. Michael’s by-the-Sea featuring local award-winning artist Shane Hall. Click here for more information about the Festival and to purchase your tickets. You can make a day of it by helping keep the city clean and enjoying the beautiful sights and sounds of Carlsbad Village!

As Saturday, April 22 gets closer, it’s important to remember all of the things that make Earth Day special. By recognizing the simple joys that come with being connected to the earth and the importance of preserving it, we can join together to honor and protect our planet. Make a difference by supporting eco-conscious artisans, cleaning up our beautiful Village or enjoying the festivities. This year there are plenty of ways to make Carlsbad a greener and more vibrant community for all to enjoy!

For residents and visitors, walkability is more and more crucial as cities expand and change. In addition to being beneficial for physical activity, walkability is also important for issues like environmental sustainability and reducing travel times. Carlsbad is incredibly walkable, and the weather is perfect for it. One of the greatest ways to see this beautiful city is on foot, which also gives you access to its spectacular natural beauty, historical parks and trails, restaurants, bars and public art. Let’s look at some activities around Carlsbad that will motivate you to get outside and start walking, whether you are just visiting, seeking some family-friendly fun or simply want to explore.

Leo Carrillo Ranch

Leo Carrillo Ranch is a hidden historical gem with stunningly beautiful scenery. There are unique adobe buildings, a reflecting pool, vintage windmills and other ancient historical landmarks.

Leo Carrillo, a Hollywood actor and preservationist, originally owned the land. The Friends of Carrillo Ranch, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) non-profit educational corporation, now assists the city in developing Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park by supporting public outreach, education and programs for children to learn about California history via practical art projects.

Leo Carrillo Ranch is the ideal location to stroll around and take in the history that surrounds it because there is so much to discover there. Visitors can use step-by-step directions on the self-guided walking tour to make sure they don’t miss any significant sights.

The journey begins on the north rim and descends to the valley via a paved, gently sloping switchback ramp. It crosses the Old North Bridge at the bottom, where you can view the weir complex. It turns around and heads in the opposite direction to the interpretive sign on First People and Native Plants, where a self-guided walking tour is available. There are numbered posts that correspond to some of the important plants on the Ranch. You can stop by the Caretaker’s Cottage, which features staff offices and exhibits and then continue down Palm Lane towards the Hacienda Compound to get your steps in as you enjoy the scenes. The path is surrounded by rare Toyon Trees and at the end of the walking tour, the magnificent Hacienda Compound comes into view.

Carlsbad Food Tours

You can also experience the charm of Carlsbad in a unique way with a food tour that guides you through the Village’s history, culture and architecture to discover its charm in a novel way. The Taste of Carlsbad Tour is a mobile party featuring six wine and food tasting spots, offered by Carlsbad Food Tours.

On this tour, you will experience Carlsbad’s rich history, architecture and culture while indulging in delectable snacks and beverages from a variety of eateries as you dine your way through the city. Your tour guide will assist you in navigating Carlsbad’s main streets, which are home to a fantastic concentration of  eateries and historic sites, as well as a distinctively mixed collection of stores, art galleries and bright street murals.

You won’t regret exploring Carlsbad’s uniquely Southern California culture and as a culinary  entirely on foot with Carlsbad Food Tours.

Carlsbad Murals

Another must-see for travelers seeking a strollable public art exhibit are the Carlsbad Murals. Local artist Brian Snyder established Senor Grubby’s Mexican Restaurant’s Carlsbad Art Wall in 2015 as a dynamic venue for local and international artists to exhibit their work. The spacious Recreation Mural Area offers aspiring muralists a place to hone their painting techniques. Daniel, also known as Mister Toledo, is a Los Angeles-based artist who recently added a new piece to the Art Wall. Daniel has long been an admirer of Carlsbad’s bright murals and you can see his most recent creation on Senor Grubby’s changing mural wall.

Carlsbad’s community of outdoor artists has been expanding, and visitors can easily explore these works of art on foot thanks to the abundance of outdoor art exhibits, live performance theaters, art fairs and musical events that are hosted around town.

The Boardwalk

Last but not least, a list of places that can be reached on foot wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the beach. The main draw for individuals who appreciate the cool sea breeze is the Carlsbad Beach Boardwalk. It is a 4-mile paved road that runs along Carlsbad Beach, and is positioned higher up and closer to the road than other regular boardwalks. It passes through a number of small beaches, including the well-known surfing beach, Tamarack Beach.

Tamarack Beach carlsbad

Since pets are not permitted on the beach, the boardwalk is a terrific spot to explore the coast with your pet, push a stroller or take a break without getting wet.

From food tours to public art installations, all it takes is a few easy steps and some comfortable walking shoes to explore the charm and character of this wonderful city. As spring approaches, keep these areas in mind and be inspired to walk around Carlsbad next time you visit.

As a city who loves furry friends, Carlsbad is thrilled to be launching an exciting new initiative –  “All Paws Lead to Carlsbad.” This pet-friendly program is designed to make travel to Carlsbad with your four-legged friends easier than ever.

When it comes down to it, there is nothing quite like the bond between a pet and their owner. Owning a pet means that you always have a comforting cuddle, a listening ear and unwavering love by your side. Our pets are a beloved part of the family and we want to bring them along on our travels but finding hotels, restaurants and attractions that welcome pets isn’t always easy. That’s why the “All Paws Lead to Carlsbad” initiative is so exciting. The program makes it easy to plan a trip with your pet by bringing together a range of pet-friendly options in one place. From February to May 2023, Carlsbad hotels, restaurants, attractions, shopping centers and retail businesses are rolling out the red carpet for pets and their owners.

Here are some of the tail-wagging activities that will be available at Carlsbad hotels:

So if you’re looking for an adventure that will rejuvenate your mind, body and soul, look no further – Carlsbad has plenty of places to strap on your hiking boots and hit the trails.

Here are a few of our favorites:

The Batiquitos Lagoon

Batiquitos Trail in Carlsbad

This one is a must-visit destination for any Carlsbad hiker. Batiquitos Lagoon is a stunning coastal lagoon that offers visitors an opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse themselves in the beauty of nature. The lagoon trail at Pelican Road is a popular hiking spot, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding wetlands and wildlife. The trail winds through diverse landscapes, from saltwater marshes to riparian forests, providing visitors with a unique and immersive experience. The out and back trail is just shy of 3.5 miles so hikers of all skill levels can enjoy the scenic route that takes them through the heart of this vibrant ecosystem.

Lake Calavera

Calaveras Trail in Carlsbad

Hiking at Carlsbad’s Lake Calavera is another fun and exhilarating experience for nature enthusiasts. The 3-mile loop around Lake Calavera Preserve offers breathtaking views of the lake, famous volcanic plug, trees and scrub brush along its rolling route. The trail offers a mix of single-track and fire roads with steep grades and rocky descents that can challenge hikers’ skills. Along the way, hikers will enjoy the beautiful views of the lake. It is an exciting and scenic hiking destination that is a must-visit for anyone who loves the great outdoors.

The Hubbs Trail in Agua Hedionda Lagoon

Hubbs Trail in Carlsbad

Another favorite lagoon trail is The Hubbs Trail. This is a short and easy hike that runs approximately a half mile along the north shore of the outer portion of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. The trail is home to a wide variety of shorebirds, and hikers can spot pelicans perched near the Mussel Farm in the outer lagoon. To access the trail, hikers should turn right coming out of the Agua Hedionda Discovery Center in Carlsbad. Then, take a right on Coast Highway followed by a right on Tamarack, and finally, the first right on Garfield. Once parked at the end of Garfield, hikers can walk down the dirt access road to reach the trail. Whether you’re a bird enthusiast or just looking for a quick and easy hike, the Hubbs Trail is an excellent choice.

Hosp Grove Park

Hosp Grove Park hiking in Carlsbad

Lastly, Hosp Grove Park in Carlsbad is a great place to go if you are seeking a bit of natural tranquility. With a length of three miles, the unpaved trail in this park is moderately hilly to steep, offering a moderate to difficult challenge. The trail winds through a vast grove of mature eucalyptus trees that were planted for the railroad industry many years ago. The trail also offers great views of the Buena Vista Lagoon and the Pacific Ocean. The city acquired the property years later, and it is now a popular spot for hikers, picnickers and nature enthusiasts seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of daily routines.

Hiking in Carlsbad is your key to witnessing some of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in the region. Countless options await, ranging from the serene Batiquitos Lagoon Trail to the more challenging Lake Calavera Trail. Valentine’s Day is almost here and there’s no better way to get in the holiday spirit than by participating in the upcoming Hearts of Carlsbad Village event! This year marks the 3rd annual blown glass treasure hunt, brought to you by Carlsbad Village Association and supported by Visit Carlsbad

With love in the air and a spirit of adventure, you’ll have the chance to explore Carlsbad Village and uncover all the treasures it has to offer. From Saturday, February 11 to Sunday, February 12, 2023, the streets of Carlsbad Village will be filled with the vibrant colors of hand-blown glass hearts, created by the talented artists at Barrio Glassworks. Whether you’re on a romantic adventure with your sweetheart, a fun day out with friends or taking a solo journey, this treasure hunt is sure to ignite feelings of excitement, joy and nostalgia for all the wonderful things that Valentine’s Day brings.

Hearts of Carlsbad

A total of 200 glass hearts will be hidden at some of the most iconic and visited locations in the Carlsbad Village over a period of two days, and all you have to do is find one to take it home. The hunt is simple, but the rewards are extraordinary. The hearts will be hidden in plain sight and will not require a map or extensive searching to find. Some of the locations might include historic sites, near public artwork, a beach entrance, outside local hotels or common areas where you can sit, relax and soak up the ambiance of the Carlsbad Village.

And that’s not all – if you register your heart using the instructions on its label, you will be entered into a drawing for some amazing local prizes, including a private glassblowing experience at Barrio Glassworks!

A map is not required, but the general Village boundaries will be posted on the Carlsbad Village Association (CVA) website prior to the start of the hunt, so be sure to check back before heading out. And don’t forget, you’re limited to finding only one heart per person, so be sure to choose wisely!

Once you’ve found your heart, simply return to the Carlsbad Village Association website to register it by entering its three-digit engraved number. The grand-prize drawing will take place on Valentine’s Day, Tuesday, February 14, and the winner will be announced on the CVA website, as well as its Instagram and Facebook pages and in the CVA eNewsletter on Wednesday, February 15.

Torrey Pines Golf Course

Another top golfing pick in Carlsbad is at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa Golf Course. This championship course has been a favorite of golfers for decades, and it’s easy to see why. With two 18-hole courses, the Champions Course and the Legends Course, there’s something for every level of golfer. If you’re hoping for something with a fun challenge and ocean views, be sure to stop by The Crossings at Carlsbad. The course was designed by Greg Nash, a nationally recognized course designer/architect and features multiple terrains for golfers of all kinds. Nestled among more than 400 acres of coastal terrain, it was named for the bridges that were built into the layout to meet topographic conditions. With its one-of-a-kind setting, you’re sure to have an enjoyable time on the links.

The Farmers Insurance Open

And last but not least, the Rancho Carlsbad Golf Club is another great option.
