Leo Carrillo Ranch 

Leo Carrillo Ranch is a hidden historical gem with stunningly beautiful scenery. There are unique adobe buildings, a reflecting pool, vintage windmills and other ancient historical landmarks.

Leo Carrillo, a Hollywood actor and preservationist, originally owned the land. The Friends of Carrillo Ranch, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) non-profit educational corporation, now assists the city in developing Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park by supporting public outreach, education and programs for children to learn about California history via practical art projects.

Leo Carrillo Ranch is the ideal location to stroll around and take in the history that surrounds it because there is so much to discover there. Visitors can use step-by-step directions on the self-guided walking tour to make sure they don’t miss any significant sights.

The journey begins on the north rim and descends to the valley via a paved, gently sloping switchback ramp. It crosses the Old North Bridge at the bottom, where you can view the weir complex. It turns around and heads in the opposite direction to the interpretive sign on First People and Native Plants, where a self-guided walking tour is available. There are numbered posts that correspond to some of the important plants on the Ranch. You can stop by the Caretaker’s Cottage, which features staff offices and exhibits and then continue down Palm Lane towards the Hacienda Compound to get your steps in as you enjoy the scenes. The path is surrounded by rare Toyon Trees and at the end of the walking tour, the magnificent Hacienda Compound comes into view.  

Carlsbad Food Tours

You can also experience the charm of Carlsbad in a unique way with a food tour that guides you through the Village’s history, culture and architecture to discover its charm in a novel way. The Taste of Carlsbad Tour is a mobile party featuring six wine and food tasting spots, offered by Carlsbad Food Tours.

On this tour, you will experience Carlsbad’s rich history, architecture and culture while indulging in delectable snacks and beverages from a variety of eateries as you dine your way through the city. Carlsbad Murals

Another must-see for travelers seeking a strollable public art exhibit are the Carlsbad Murals. Local artist Brian Snyder established Senor Grubby’s Mexican Restaurant’s Carlsbad Art Wall in 2015 as a dynamic venue for local and international artists to exhibit their work. The spacious Recreation Mural Area offers aspiring muralists a place to hone their painting techniques. Daniel, also known as Mister Toledo, is a Los Angeles-based artist who recently added a new piece to the Art Wall. Daniel has long been an admirer of Carlsbad’s bright murals and you can see his most recent creation on Senor Grubby’s changing mural wall.

Carlsbad’s community of outdoor artists has been expanding, and visitors can easily explore these works of art on foot thanks to the abundance of outdoor art exhibits, live performance theaters, art fairs and musical events that are hosted around town.

The Boardwalk

Last but not least, a list of places that can be reached on foot wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the beach. The main draw for individuals who appreciate the cool sea breeze is the Carlsbad Beach Boardwalk. It is a 4-mile paved road that runs along Carlsbad Beach, and is positioned higher up and closer to the road than other regular boardwalks. It passes through a number of small beaches, including the well-known surfing beach, Tamarack Beach.

Since pets are not permitted on the beach, the boardwalk is a terrific spot to explore the coast with your pet, push a stroller or take a break without getting wet.

In-person murder mystery performances take true crime to the next level. When an audience becomes part of the story, it results in a nerve-wracking experience with the added comfort of safety at the end of the night. 

This year, the interactive murder mystery experience is in our backyard at Murder Mystery Weekend at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. 

On Friday, October 14 – Sunday, October 16,  the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa and the Murder Mystery Company will host an intriguing Murder Mystery Weekend. Guests are invited to take part in a getaway to die for. This year’s group event is two full days of interrogation, bribery and a series of unhinged murders. Check-in at the resort starts on Friday, October 14 with the first performance beginning at 5:00 p.m. Then, the real detective work begins. After the first act, guests will be invited to start asking questions and investigating what they’ve seen. You can bribe guests for clues or forge your own path – either way, it’s important to avoid that one guest who is whacking off invitees before it’s too late.

On Saturday, October 15, the fun continues. Act Two starts at 10 a.m. and from there, the investigation carries on. Guests will be given free time in the afternoon to explore the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa and Carlsbad. As evening rolls in, guests can explore the Crime Scene Room before attending a formal dinner party featuring glamorous Old-Hollywood appeal. Everyone is encouraged to show up in 1920’s-1940’s evening wear and be ready to see crimes unfold. 

Guests will spend the weekend with one eye turned over their shoulders and one eye on the prize. Take a stab at who the next victim will be and make sure that you’re not next on the list. Clues will come slowly and deliberately and problem solving will keep innocent bystanders out of the fray. On Sunday, October 16, all crimes will be revealed and guests will be restored to life.

Outdoor art festivals might sound like a trend from past decades. But let’s be real – when it comes down to it, these past decades are currently trending and art festivals haven’t gone anywhere. New art fairs continue to spring up all over the world. Many take place over the course of multiple days, giving artists a space to display their work and make money while they’re at it. Art fairs are also culturally enriching, educational and are a forum for both unique and classic art forms. 

By and large, art fairs are the place for artists to see their hard work payoff in real time. Vibrant atmospheres and engaged attendees highlight how art can bring the community together and shed a spotlight on artist creativity that might otherwise go unnoticed. Every art piece has an inspirational story behind its beauty and these stories are brought to life by the artists who create them. Art fairs provide an opportunity for enthusiastic community members to interact with and support local artists and businesses, as well as having a creative and enlightened way to experience their city. 

From sculptures to paintings and from the dramatic to the whimsical, art festivals boost the visibility of local emerging and seasoned artists and enhance the artistic culture of the community. And that is why, after two years of hiatus, we are very excited that the Artwalk Carlsbad is returning to the scene at the end of this month.

This year, the third annual Artwalk Carlsbad will be held on Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 25 on Armada Drive in Carlsbad, just east of the Flower Fields. Admission is FREE for attendees. There will be photography, paintings, glass work, fine jewelry and sculpture for sale from over 150 different artists from the U.S. and Mexico. The event will also offer interactive art activities for children and musical performances by local bands. Guests can enjoy delicious food from food trucks and beer and wine for sale to drink while on site.

Situated above the Flower Fields, Artwalk Carlsbad is unique because of the natural beauty of the area surrounding the artwork exhibits. The event will be spread out along Armada Drive, overlooking a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean. There are two entrances for easy access along Armada and Fleet Street. Free parking is available adjacent to the event. 

Once inside the event, guests can stroll through at their own leisure and explore all that Artwalk Carlsbad has to offer. There will also be plenty of activities for children at the Kidswalk. Innovative Therapy 4-Kids Inc., Tinkergarten and Villa Musica will be hosting everything from coloring and creative thinking to play-based outdoor learning and interactive lessons on how to create musical instruments from common materials. 

In order to give back to the community, ArtWalk Carlsbad and each of ArtWalk San Diego’s three annual festivals support their non-profit partner, ArtReach San Diego, an organization aimed at increasing equity in visual arts education in K-8 schools throughout San Diego County. Focusing on Title 1 schools, ArtReach San Diego offers free or low cost workshops to schools that have no other resources for art. Their programs inspire youth creativity and builds confidence through visual arts expression and community connection.

Living with a dog provides stress relief and a sense of calm. Interacting with our dogs increases serotonin and dopamine levels in our brains, both of which are associated with tranquility and pleasure.

For these reasons and more is why Love on a Leash® was created in the early 1980’s by North County San Diego pet therapy enthusiasts. The organization was incorporated in 1995 and over the years, has grown to have representation in nearly every state in the United States. This 501(c)(3) organization is committed to making volunteer pet therapy available to communities across the country. Their programs intentionally target opportunities to interact with animals in meaningful ways. Whether that means using pets to help heal or simply offering the joy of pets in a community setting, Love on a Leash® is driven by the pursuit of bringing comfort and happiness to the people they serve. 

Love on a Leash® understands that a therapy pet’s primary purpose is to help brighten somebody’s day. This means that therapy pets are not only taken to hospitals and clinics, but that they visit wherever they are invited. This includes events, schools, libraries and private homes. All of the Love on a Leash® animals are privately owned pets and are brought to events by volunteers. There is never a fee for their visits and pets go home with their owners at the end of the day. There is a certification process for therapy owners and pets as well as ongoing efforts to increase awareness about the benefits of pet therapy. 

In Carlsbad, you can find Love on Leash® certified therapy dogs at the Carlsbad Dove Library and Georgina Cole Library through their Paws to Read program. Children can read their favorite book to four-legged friends regularly throughout the month of August on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Reading to the dogs at Love on a Leash® is a therapeutic and fun way to curb the stress of the new school year.

Jazz Evensong at St. Michaels

Jazz goes hand-in-hand with outdoor rest and relaxation. This year, St. Michael’s Church By-the-Sea is bringing jazz to Carlsbad through their Jazz Evensong programming. Guests can sit on the lawn as the sun sets and prepare for the week ahead with Dene Davidson’s Cool Jazz Band.

The soothing sounds of the guitar, drums, bass, piano, saxophone, and flute are the perfect combination for ending a fun summer weekend. Every Sunday at 4 p.m. the oldest church in Carlsbad invites guests to enjoy the freedom and creativity of jazz on the lawn, free of charge. Each event includes a mixture of concert-style jazz mixed with meditation and prayer. TGIF Concerts in the Park

Returning on June 24, 2022, Carlsbad Concerts in the Park are back in action. In 2020 and 2021, TGIF Concert in the Parks were canceled or held virtually due to the pandemic. This year, live concerts are back and stand to be a true highlight of summertime in the city. On Friday evenings for nine consecutive weeks, concerts will be hosted at four of the largest community parks in the city.

Concerts are free and feature dining al fresco, plenty of space to bring a blanket and spread out, and some of the best live entertainment in the city. Shows start at 6 p.m. and offer a brief intermission around 7. Mark your calendars to visit Stagecoach Community Park, Poinsettia Community Park, Calavera Hills Community Park, or Alga Norte Community Park on Fridays this summer for summertime tunes and outdoor entertainment that can’t be matched.

The outdoors endure whatever the earth throws at them, but it’s easy to forget that weather and foot traffic can make a huge impact on even the most rugged trailheads. When you’re on a scenic hike, it’s easy to want to veer off the beaten path and explore the unknown. What is hard to anticipate is the impact that this can have on the environment around us. Items can accidentally slip out of our backpacks,and our shoes can leave items that weren’t meant to exist off the trail. If you have explored the trails around Carlsbad, you will notice that there is often trash on the trails. Picking up items like cigarette butts, candy wrappers, and water bottle caps can go a long way in preserving nature and upholding the paths for future hikers.

Here are three popular hiking spots in Carlsbad and information about a volunteer cleanup event you can sign up for this month to help keep the trails clean. 

Aviara Trails

The Aviara Trail system is one of the most popular and diverse set of trails in the city. Each hike has unique nature experiences and varying levels of difficulty. Of the five trails available, the Lagoon Trail is the most popular. It is a relatively easy 2.13 miles in length and runs along the water and the Aviara golf course. During the winter months, many different bird species migrate here to avoid the cold. Other trails within the system include the Eucalyptus Trail, which features groves of eucalyptus trees, the Black Sage Trail which was named after the native sage plant in the canyons and along the water’s edge, and the Salt Marsh Trail that runs through the low lying areas surrounding the lagoon and its slopes.

Hidden Canyon Trail

Hidden Canyon Park is a 22-acre park that has a large canyon cutting through it. The majority of the park is undeveloped, giving nature lovers tons of space to spread out and enjoy the greenery. There is a short trail within the park that connects it to the Ann D. L’Heureux Dog Park. The hike features scenic walking paths, with picnic tables and play areas.

Veterans Park Trails

The Veterans Park Trails offer a unique view of many of the most popular landmarks in Carlsbad. The trail head starts at the west end of the Crossings parking lot and is an unpaved path with views of the Flower Fields, Agua Hedionda Lagoon, LEGOLAND, and the City golf course. The loop is scenic and peaceful, and is accessible year-round. It offers a wide diversity of flora and fauna with trails that provide bird watching of egrets, herons, and waterfowl. 

City of Carlsbad Trail Volunteer Event

If you want to pitch in to help maintain Carlsbad hiking trails, the City of Carlsbad is hosting a Trail Volunteer Event on February 26th. The volunteer cleanup event is for nature lovers of all ages and will last from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. with an introductory session at Rancho Carrillo East. Guides will go over how to use cleanup tools and provide volunteers with shovels, rakes, shears, water, and McClouds. 

Carlsbad is a picturesque location for trailblazing. Next time you want to get outside and enjoy the fresh air – try any one of these great trails and keep the path clean by volunteering at the city cleanup event on February 26th.

One of the most popular lists of favorites from celebrities are book lists. Reading is a solitary activity, regardless of if you’re famous or not. It is a way to enjoy adventure and fictional space without leaving the comfort of your own home. And, celebrities’ favorite book lists allow us to share that same adventure, without ever having met.

In 2021, there were a few books that were shared favorites among many different celebrities. Reese Witherspoon added Untamed to her list. The book was written by Glennon Doyle and tells the tale of a brave mother who learns that living for herself is the only way she can show her children how to truly live. Both President Obama and Kaia Gerber recommend Normal People. This story follows the inner workings of friendship in ordinary and not so ordinary circumstances of wealth, love, and the lack thereof. Oprah’s book club picked Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family by Robert Kolker. The story follows a family of twelve children, riddled with mental illness and the quest to understand it.

Re-opening on February 8, 2022, the Friends Bookstores are located at the Dove and Cole libraries. The stores offer bargain prices for gently used books, magazines, sheet music, puzzles, and more. If you want to load up on good reads this year, Friends of the Carlsbad Libraries Bookstores is the place to get a good deal while supporting the community.

Usually, it’s Thanksgiving dinner that people save their appetites for. This year, the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa isn’t setting a limit on when you can start eating, or how much you can have. The restaurant’s newest venue, Costa de la Luna, will be hosting a Chef’s Champagne Buffet, catered by Executive Chef Adam Solowitz. The buffet will include a full feast of holiday treats, including a cold seafood bar, Cajun deep-fried turkey, and carving stations. The cost is $125 per adult and $55 per child ages 4-10. 

Or, if you prefer a seated pre-fixe option, Bob’s Steak and Chop House will also be offering a traditional take on Thanksgiving Dinner. The restaurant will offer the finest selection of meats and sides from 3-7 p.m, and are taking reservations now.

Another resort that is offering a variety of dining options this holiday season is the Park Hyatt Aviara. The California Salon at the Park Hyatt will be starting the day early with a Thanksgiving Day Brunch Buffet starting at 11:00 a.m. and lasting until 4:00 p.m. for only $105 for adults and $55 for children. Ember and Rye will be hosting a Thanksgiving day buffet with a family-style feast for diners of all ages. 

Lastly, the Ponto Lago will also be keeping family in mind with a Baja-California themed menu and accompanying family feast.

The Carlsbad Fire Department Foundation is a 501c(3) nonprofit organization that was created to support the Carlsbad Fire Department through funding, community outreach, scholarships, and public education. It was created by a small group of local citizens in February of 2014. They created the Foundation to enhance fire and rescue services in the community and have since broadened their scope to support education and community outreach in order to help serve the heroes that serve us. 

For the firefighting community, these services are priceless. The Foundation raises money to purchase chemical detox chambers for firefighters, ring removal tools, enhanced hose couplers for the jaws of life, and college scholarships. 

Detox chambers are an essential and necessary part of maintaining safety for the firefighters that save our lives. Firefighters are regularly exposed to toxins and chemicals that can cause cancer later in life. The chambers allow workers to excrete these toxic chemicals through medical-grade infrared heating technology. 

For victims of tragedy, ring removal tools can mean the difference between a severe injury and a safe exit. Things like wedding rings often need to be removed quickly to prevent hands from being crushed or burned, and ring removal tools can help make sure that rings are removed quickly and safely.  

In fire emergencies, time is of the essence. When seconds count, connecting two fire hoses into one for access to damaging flames is crucial. Enhanced hose couplers allow firefighters to combine two hoses quickly without leaking the hydraulic fluid that puts out flames before they cause devastating damage. 

And finally, education is the fuel that runs a successful community. The Foundation helps to provide college scholarships to the dependents of the Carlsbad Fire Department workforce.

Traditionally, the Carlsbad Fire Department Foundation hosts an annual Golf Tournament & Fundraiser at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort in November.
