Being active in Carlsbad is easy. Taking a walk outside turns even the most lethargic Mondays into an excuse to soak up the sun and enjoy the breeze. Jogging along Carlsbad State Beach is less like a workout and more like a vacation. Perched above the many miles of sandy beach with views of the Pacific Ocean as far as the eye can see, the paved walkway runs along Carlsbad’s beach town and is a sightseer’s dream and a runner’s haven. For bikers, the Carlsbad Coastal Rail Trail runs right along the tracks and is set apart from road traffic, making it a safe and leisure ride. Swimmers have the expanse of the ocean to kick their legs and generate a healthy sweat while exercising. Carlsbad’s ecosystem is the perfect setting for all different types of outdoor exercise. For athletes who do a little bit of everything, the 38th Annual Carlsbad Triathlon is on July 14-15 at Tamarack Beach this year. It is an annual tradition that encourages everyone to get outside and get active.

During the triathlon, there are five different race combinations for competitors to choose from. Sprinting, swimming, biking, and aquabiking are all options that can be committed to in an array of different combinations. The triathlon is completed in sprints. The first set of sprints will involve an open water swim, marked clearly with buoys and guide markers. The swim course starts at Cherry Avenue and goes in a counterclockwise motion, guiding athletes from the starting line to the transition/exit.

The biking sprints start with an uphill effort. The trek from the beach extends southward with loops and U-turns added in for complexity. Low gears and stamina are paramount in getting bikers through this sprint and on to the next.

The running portion of the race is next to none when it comes to views and course layout. Running alongside the coastline and away from traffic, runners will begin their sprint by trekking along the sea wall. There is a small hill that extends up from Pine Street. The difficulty of the hill is quickly diminished by the views crossing over the Agua Hedionda inlet. Overall, the running course is relatively flat with astounding views and gentle inclines.

Many triathlons are reserved for long time competitors and people who have been training for months on end. The Carlsbad triathlon is an event for all skill levels.  See below for the five different options available to competitors:

  • Michellie Jones Sprint Plus Triathlon: .6-mile swim, 15.5 mile bike, 3.1 mile run
  • Michellie Jones Sprint Plus Triathlon – Relay: .6-mile swim, 15.5 mile bike, 3.1 mile run
  • Sprint Plus Aquabike: .6-mile swim, 15.5 mile bike
  • Sprint Triathlon: .3-mile swim, 10 mile bike, 3.1 mile run
  • Sprint Duathlon: 1-mile run, 10 mile bike, 3.1 mile run

Athletes can register and pick up their packets on Friday, July 12th at PlayTri Oceanside. On Saturday, there will be a swim clinic hosted by long time triathlete Brian Long. Between 10-11 a.m. experts will review the course and at 1:00 p.m. Ironman Michelle Jones will continue the conversation, giving athletes key tips about the course in front of them.

The LPGA Kia Classic is one of golf’s finest events. Celebrating its 10th year, the Classic is back again this year, bringing nail biting competition and star-studded talent to Carlsbad’s backyard.

The tournament started in 2010 and features all of golf’s favorite female stars. Last year, Eun-Hee Ji won with an ace on the closing stretch to secure her fourth win on the tour. Ji’s win is notable, as she has recently battled back from a notable absence in the winner’s circle. Her career appeared on the global stage in 2007, and she quickly won the Women’s US Open in 2009. Since then, she seemed to have disappeared off the radar until she re-emerged as the LPGA champion in Taiwan two years ago. In the off season, she worked with her caddy to change her back swing. The hard work paid off and she secured a win at the 2018 Classic with a hole-in-one to top it off.

Celebrating 10 Years with the LPGA Kia Classic

This year, the tournament will be drawing in golf greats like Ji and her close rivals, Lydia Ko, Lexi Thompson, Paula Creamer, and Michelle Wi. Last year, Christie Kerr and Lizette Salas gave champion Eun-Hee Ji a run for her money. Each finished a mere two strokes behind Ji, carding a final round at 3-under par. The trio played alongside each other during the tournament, and the competition was close up until the end very end. Spectators can be sure that this year’s roster of players will deliver the same level of competition and excitement as last year. If Li’s re-emergence as a winner shows anything, it shows that you can never be sure who will come out on top. Similar to Ji, Lydia Ko has had a roller coaster of ups and downs during her career. She started playing golf at age five. By the young age of 20, she had achieved more than her male counterpart Tiger Woods had at the same point in his career. Nonetheless, her game has taken a slump in recent years and she has fallen in and out of the top 10 rankings. As a crowd favorite, it will be interesting to see if Ko will turn on the prodigy of her youth and make a comeback at this year’s Kia Classic.

The tournament is on March 25th-31st and is being held at Carlsbad own’s Aviara Golf Club at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort. The Kia Classic will feature 144 of the best women in golf. The purse is a healthy 1.8 million dollars and the course is spread across 6,558 acres of lush greens and native flora. It is a par 72, and the front nine holes range from a mixture of fairways, uphill grass mounds, picturesque coastal valleys, and straightaways. The back nine holes increase in difficulty and feature beautiful expanses of water and eucalyptus trees.

Tickets are available for three different tiers of spectating. Grounds access can be purchased for $20/day or $40 for the weekend. Guests can enjoy Clubhouse access in addition to grounds access for $40/day or $80 for the weekend. Champions Club tickets include access to the 18th green skybox, a complimentary full bar and lunch, as well as snacks and access to the grounds and Clubhouse.

If you would like to get up a behind-the-scenes look at the tournament, volunteer registration is now open. Get your tickets now and experience the fun and excitement of this year’s 10th annual LPGA Kia Classic tournament.

Images of frosty weather and falling leaves are starting to pop up in department stores and coffee shops alike. From fantastical haunted houses and costume inspired role playing to friendly ghosts and gift bags of candy, Halloween is a holiday that can scare fear into your heart while inspiring creativity and joy. Nestled just before the rush of Thanksgiving and Christmas, Halloween ushers in the holiday months with trick-or-treating and an excuse to throw a good party. In Carlsbad, there are a number of different Halloween festivities that will allow you to embrace your dark side, have fun dressing up, or simply welcome in the fall months with things like bobbing for apples. Here are four fun-loving, scary, and family oriented events you won’t want to miss this Halloween season.

LEGOLAND Brick-or-Treat Party Nights

Every Saturday this month, LEGOLAND will be keeping the entire park open for Brick-or-Treat Party Nights. Throughout the year, LEGOLAND inspires creativity and imagination. During the Halloween season, this is amplified with costume contests, character meet-and-greets, dancing, and more. Kids and parents can use a map to find treat stations sprinkled throughout the park while taking in live entertainment and performances by favorites like LEGO Mummy and Lord Vampyre. Treat stations will have over one million pieces of candy, as well as Clif bar treats for healthier alternatives. Children are encouraged to wear costumes and can participate in one of three different costume contests with the chance to win exciting prizes. Guests who really want to experience the thrill of the holiday can take their chances on the Ghost Cruise, a boat ride to haunted locations led by Paranormal Investigators.

Dive-In Movie Night at Cape Rey

While a poolside Halloween attraction may sound crazy for other climates, Carlsbad is still boasting sunny weather and rays well into the fall. For families who love to kick back and enjoy the ambience of our climate while being entertained, the Cape Rey Dive-In Movie Nights are a perfect chance to unwind. This Halloween, the resort is featuring a ‘spooktacular’ showing of Hotel Transylvania to get everyone in the Halloween spirit. Guests can enjoy complimentary popcorn and a sunset swim while enjoying the show. RSVP online now to reserve your spot.

Howl-O-Wine Party at Witch Creek Winery

Witch Creek Winery is one of Carlsbad’s best kept secrets when it comes to fine wines in a great location. Nestled along Highway 101 and right in the middle of the coastal village, Witch Creek Winery is one of the oldest urban wineries in the state. As Halloween rolls around, the winery’s name takes on new meaning. This year, Witch Creek Winery is hosting an event to benefit SPOT, a 501c3 organization that advocates for homeless pets throughout the community. The Howl-O-Wine Party will be a three hour event with a funny dog costume contest and a raffle. The ticket price includes two glasses of wine, as well as a charcuterie plate and participation in the door prize drawing. Have fun dressing up your favorite four-legged companion and join the Howl-O-Wine Party at Witch Creek Winery for a good cause.
