Earth Day is one-of-a-kind. It’s where we get to celebrate our beautiful planet and take action to protect it for generations to come. The global movement that started in 1970 now inspires people to reflect and take steps to reduce our carbon footprint, conserve natural resources and promote sustainable living.

If you’re in Carlsbad during Earth Day, you’re in for a treat! There are so many great Earth Day events happening, and you won’t want to miss out on any of them.

Earth Day - Saturday, April 22 Carlsbad CA

To start with, mark your calendars for Saturday, April 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. because the bi-annual Makers Market is back for its seventh year. This event is the perfect blend of creativity, community and good vibes. It has a new location in downtown Carlsbad on Carlsbad Village Drive and Roosevelt Street, making it a great spot to stop for brunch or a lunch date. If you visit the Maker’s Market this year, get ready to browse and shop handmade, vintage, up-cycled and unique goods from southern Californian artisans.

This year, the Makers Market is showcasing eco-friendly makers who are dedicated to promoting and encouraging eco-responsible practices, from upcycling to sustainable packaging and zero-plastic packaging. By visiting their booths and indulging in their eco-friendly products, you’ll be doing your part to support sustainable agriculture and farming.

In addition to the Makers Market, Carlsbad Village Clean-Ups are an initiative that prioritizes the purposes of Earth Day all year round. Village cleanups engage the community as well as partner organizations like Pure Project and Handel’s Ice Cream. Over 1,000 pounds of trash were collected in 2022, and the goal is to continue the effort to keep Carlsbad Village litter-free. In 2023, cleanups will continue bi-monthly, and efforts will focus on collecting one of the city’s biggest litter problems – cigarette butts.

On Earth Day, the group will be leading a designated I Love A Clean San Diego cleanup site for an opportunity to reach into the far ends of the Village. This cleanup will be one of two larger community cleanups happening in 2023 in partnership with the Richness of Giving. This cleanup, Creek to Bay, will be hosted by Engel & Volkers. Guests can join together with thousands of volunteers countywide to clean-up litter.

Finally, starting at 12 p.m., the Carlsbad Music Festival will be hosting its Spring Eclectic Lawn at St. Michael’s by-the-Sea featuring local award-winning artist Shane Hall. Click here for more information about the Festival and to purchase your tickets. You can make a day of it by helping keep the city clean and enjoying the beautiful sights and sounds of Carlsbad Village!

As Saturday, April 22 gets closer, it’s important to remember all of the things that make Earth Day special. By recognizing the simple joys that come with being connected to the earth and the importance of preserving it, we can join together to honor and protect our planet. Make a difference by supporting eco-conscious artisans, cleaning up our beautiful Village or enjoying the festivities. This year there are plenty of ways to make Carlsbad a greener and more vibrant community for all to enjoy!

For residents and visitors, walkability is more and more crucial as cities expand and change. In addition to being beneficial for physical activity, walkability is also important for issues like environmental sustainability and reducing travel times. Carlsbad is incredibly walkable, and the weather is perfect for it. One of the greatest ways to see this beautiful city is on foot, which also gives you access to its spectacular natural beauty, historical parks and trails, restaurants, bars and public art. Let’s look at some activities around Carlsbad that will motivate you to get outside and start walking, whether you are just visiting, seeking some family-friendly fun or simply want to explore.

Leo Carrillo Ranch

Leo Carrillo Ranch is a hidden historical gem with stunningly beautiful scenery. There are unique adobe buildings, a reflecting pool, vintage windmills and other ancient historical landmarks.

Leo Carrillo, a Hollywood actor and preservationist, originally owned the land. The Friends of Carrillo Ranch, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) non-profit educational corporation, now assists the city in developing Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park by supporting public outreach, education and programs for children to learn about California history via practical art projects.

Leo Carrillo Ranch is the ideal location to stroll around and take in the history that surrounds it because there is so much to discover there. Visitors can use step-by-step directions on the self-guided walking tour to make sure they don’t miss any significant sights.

The journey begins on the north rim and descends to the valley via a paved, gently sloping switchback ramp. It crosses the Old North Bridge at the bottom, where you can view the weir complex. It turns around and heads in the opposite direction to the interpretive sign on First People and Native Plants, where a self-guided walking tour is available. There are numbered posts that correspond to some of the important plants on the Ranch. You can stop by the Caretaker’s Cottage, which features staff offices and exhibits and then continue down Palm Lane towards the Hacienda Compound to get your steps in as you enjoy the scenes. The path is surrounded by rare Toyon Trees and at the end of the walking tour, the magnificent Hacienda Compound comes into view.

Carlsbad Food Tours

You can also experience the charm of Carlsbad in a unique way with a food tour that guides you through the Village’s history, culture and architecture to discover its charm in a novel way. The Taste of Carlsbad Tour is a mobile party featuring six wine and food tasting spots, offered by Carlsbad Food Tours.

On this tour, you will experience Carlsbad’s rich history, architecture and culture while indulging in delectable snacks and beverages from a variety of eateries as you dine your way through the city. Your tour guide will assist you in navigating Carlsbad’s main streets, which are home to a fantastic concentration of  eateries and historic sites, as well as a distinctively mixed collection of stores, art galleries and bright street murals.

You won’t regret exploring Carlsbad’s uniquely Southern California culture and as a culinary  entirely on foot with Carlsbad Food Tours.

Carlsbad Murals

Another must-see for travelers seeking a strollable public art exhibit are the Carlsbad Murals. Local artist Brian Snyder established Senor Grubby’s Mexican Restaurant’s Carlsbad Art Wall in 2015 as a dynamic venue for local and international artists to exhibit their work. The spacious Recreation Mural Area offers aspiring muralists a place to hone their painting techniques. Daniel, also known as Mister Toledo, is a Los Angeles-based artist who recently added a new piece to the Art Wall. Daniel has long been an admirer of Carlsbad’s bright murals and you can see his most recent creation on Senor Grubby’s changing mural wall.

murals carlsbad ca

Carlsbad’s community of outdoor artists has been expanding, and visitors can easily explore these works of art on foot thanks to the abundance of outdoor art exhibits, live performance theaters, art fairs and musical events that are hosted around town.

The Boardwalk

Last but not least, a list of places that can be reached on foot wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the beach. The main draw for individuals who appreciate the cool sea breeze is the Carlsbad Beach Boardwalk. It is a 4-mile paved road that runs along Carlsbad Beach, and is positioned higher up and closer to the road than other regular boardwalks. It passes through a number of small beaches, including the well-known surfing beach, Tamarack Beach.

Tamarack Beach carlsbad

Since pets are not permitted on the beach, the boardwalk is a terrific spot to explore the coast with your pet, push a stroller or take a break without getting wet.

From food tours to public art installations, all it takes is a few easy steps and some comfortable walking shoes to explore the charm and character of this wonderful city. As spring approaches, keep these areas in mind and be inspired to walk around Carlsbad next time you visit.

One of the most popular areas within the city is the Carlsbad Village. Since 1975, Carlsbad Village has been home to one of the largest street fairs in the United States – the Carlsbad Village Street Faire. The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Kennedy & Associates have hosted the event for over 45 years, and it has grown year over year.

As a Marine veteran, Keith Kennedy was a longtime resident of Carlsbad who was deeply invested in his community. He started a sidewalk sale to support local businesses and in 15 short years, it became one of the largest one-day street fairs in the nation. Keith went on to pursue a career in street faire management and grew Kennedy & Associates (now Kennedy Faires) with the support of his son-in-law, who eventually inherited the business and passed it on to family friend, Rick Bauer. In 1982, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce took over management of the Carlsbad Street Faire, carrying out Keith’s mission to help downtown businesses thrive.

This free event has grown to be so popular that it not only continually attracts people from all over Southern California, but from other states as well. Some visitors even plan their vacations around the bi-annual event that happens in May and November in Carlsbad Village. The twice-a-year tradition regularly attracts tens of thousands of people and not only supports local businesses, but local performers as well.

carlsbad village street faire 2The 2022 Carlsbad Village Street Faire will be back in full swing for the second time this year on Sunday, November 6. It will take place in the Village, on Grand Ave and Carlsbad Blvd, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Carlsbad Village Street Faire will feature over 900 unique vendors – everything from arts and crafts to clothing and antiques will be on display from local vendors. There will be an international food center with hand curated dishes from Central America, Asia and everywhere in between. There will also be plenty of activities for kids, including rides and a special pancake breakfast for the whole family.

The event welcomes many tourists and locals, so parking will be extremely limited. There will be complimentary shuttles to and from the Village every 15 minutes. Shuttle pick-ups will be located at the northwest corner of Sears at The Shoppes at Carlsbad (Highway 78 and Jefferson) and the Poinsettia Coaster Station (Poinsettia exit off of I-5).

The North County Transit District is even offering 2-for-1 fares on the Coaster and plans to add three more round-trip routes to its Sunday service specifically for the event.

The Carlsbad Village Street Faire brings the rich history of the city and its residents all into one place. Don’t miss this year’s second chance to stroll

through Carlsbad Village, taste new things, sip a beverage of your choice, buy vintage souvenirs and play games with the kids. Book accommodations now for a fun Sunday full of shopping, food and festivities. For more information on Carlsbad resorts and hotels, visit https://visitcarlsbad.com/.

And even though it might still feel like summer outside, Halloween season is just around the corner. The custom of trick-or-treating, in which children dress up in their favorite costume and solicit treats from neighbors, became popular in the United States in the early 20th century. Today, Halloween is one of the biggest holidays for candy sales in the United States, exceeding $2 billion annually.

Brick-or-Treat 2022

To kick things off, LEGOLAND’s Brick-or-Treat Monster Party is opening its doors for its signature Halloween event for families to enjoy every Saturday from September 17 to October 29 and on Sunday, October 30. All Brick-or-Treat activities will run from 3 p.m. – 9 p.m during the event and from 2 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Sunday, October 30. This year’s theme is a Monster Party and it’s guaranteed to be a quirky, weird and and bewitchingly fun attraction for families with monsters taking over the park!

LEGO Halloween 1

LEGOLAND will transform into the ultimate Halloween celebration with themed zones, decorations and, of course, candy and trick-or-treating. After the sun goes down, the frighteningly-fun Monster Party kicks into high gear and rides like the Dragon Coaster will come to life with party lights and a groovy monster disco soundtrack. There will even be a premiere of a new, thrilling 4D movie “The Great Monster Chase!” where four tweens try to sneak into a monster party. The not-so-spooky flick features special effects with wind, bubbles, water and more.

There will be more family-friendly live entertainment spooktacular and activities including LEGO Lord Vampyre’s Very Important Monsters (V.I.M.) Dance Party, Operation

LEGO Halloween 2

Monster Squad and A Candy-Coated Curse, where trick-or-treaters sing and dance to get out of a “sticky” situation. There is an all new lineup of shows in 2022 with never-before-seen LEGO characters.

From dressing up as ghosts, witches, and skeletons to superheroes, movie stars or cartoon characters – Halloween is all about imagination and creativity. All guests (children and adults) are

encouraged to join the festivities in costume. There will be a ghoulishly fun parade and costume contest with a variety of categories for the entire family. Make sure everyone is wearing your favorite costume and be ready to show off your best monster moves!

LEGOLAND’s Brick-or-Treat Monster Party celebrates all of the best things Halloween has to offer. Admission is included with the purchase of daily tickets and select annual passes. Be sure to get your tickets online, arrive early, take note of show times and plan your trick or treat schedule – Halloween is almost here!

Outdoor art festival Carlsbad

Outdoor art festivals might sound like a trend from past decades. But let’s be real – when it comes down to it, these past decades are currently trending and art festivals haven’t gone anywhere. New art fairs continue to spring up all over the world. Many take place over the course of multiple days, giving artists a space to display their work and make money while they’re at it. Art fairs are also culturally enriching, educational and are a forum for both unique and classic art forms.

By and large, art fairs are the place for artists to see their hard work payoff in real time. Vibrant atmospheres and engaged attendees highlight how art can bring the community together and shed a spotlight on artist creativity that might otherwise go unnoticed. Every art piece has an inspirational story behind its beauty and these stories are brought to life by the artists who create them. Art fairs provide an opportunity for enthusiastic community members to interact with and support local artists and businesses, as well as having a creative and enlightened way to experience their city.

ArtWalk Carlsbad

From sculptures to paintings and from the dramatic to the whimsical, art festivals boost the visibility of local emerging and seasoned artists and enhance the artistic culture of the community. And that is why, after two years of hiatus, we are very excited that the Artwalk Carlsbad is returning to the scene at the end of this month.

This year, the third annual Artwalk Carlsbad will be held on Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 25 on Armada Drive in Carlsbad, just east of the Flower Fields. Admission is FREE for attendees. There will be photography, paintings, glass work, fine jewelry and sculpture for sale from over 150 different artists from the U.S. and Mexico. The event will also offer interactive art activities for children and musical performances by local bands. Guests can enjoy delicious food from food trucks and beer and wine for sale to drink while on site.

Situated above the Flower Fields, Artwalk Carlsbad is unique because of the natural beauty of the area surrounding the artwork exhibits. The event will be spread out along Armada Drive, overlooking a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean. There are two entrances for easy access along Armada and Fleet Street. Free parking is available adjacent to the event.

ArtWalk Carlsbad

Once inside the event, guests can stroll through at their own leisure and explore all that Artwalk Carlsbad has to offer. There will also be plenty of activities for children at the Kidswalk. Innovative Therapy 4-Kids Inc., Tinkergarten and Villa Musica will be hosting everything from coloring and creative thinking to play-based outdoor learning and interactive lessons on how to create musical instruments from common materials.

In order to give back to the community, ArtWalk Carlsbad and each of ArtWalk San Diego’s three annual festivals support their non-profit partner, ArtReach San Diego, an organization aimed at increasing equity in visual arts education in K-8 schools throughout San Diego County. Focusing on Title 1 schools, ArtReach San Diego offers free or low cost workshops to schools that have no other resources for art. Their programs inspire youth creativity and builds confidence through visual arts expression and community connection.

Artwalk Carlsbad 2022 will be open from 11am – 6pm on Saturday, September 24 and from 10am – 5pm on Sunday, September 25. For more information (including a location map), visit https://artwalksandiego.org/carlsbad/. Hope to see you there!
