Summertime is all about being outdoors, having fun, and feeling good. Since summertime revolves around good vibes, it’s only natural that each summer has its own playlist. Music is a big part of road trips, pool parties, and grilling outdoors. Finding music to match the joy of summer can form memories for years to come. It’s hot outside and school is out. There are dunk tanks and beach days and steaming asphalt. There’s no doubt about it, summertime definitely has a soundtrack that’s all it’s own.

Movies are larger than life, books become airy and lighthearted, and TV embraces the embarrassing pleasure of ‘living your best life’.  When it comes to music, summer serves it up outdoors. Summertime music embraces the ups and downs of vacations, steamy afternoons, and evening thunderstorms. From hookups to breakups, flings, and romances, to new places and relaxation – summertime playlists are a sign of the season.

In 2020, we took a break from some of our favorite events. Indoor concerts, movies, and social gatherings were all off the table. Even large outdoor events were hit by the effects of the pandemic. Virtual events took their place with new ways to get big groups of people together to celebrate. Still, virtual events couldn’t take the place of our favorite gatherings. Ticketmaster offered rainchecks for high-profile gigs but many events on the local scene had to be canceled. In Carlsbad, summertime is a hotbed for embracing the open air and gathering community. Our love of the arts and music plays a big role in our community and for that reason, one of our favorite summertime events is the Carlsbad Music Festival. Music is an art form that is a unique expression of personality, creativity, and talent. It can elevate your mood, reduce stress, improve memory, and even increase cognition. And, live music does all of that and more. Live music gives listeners a way to share an experience and feel inspired.

For 16 years leading up to the pandemic, the Carlsbad Music Festival served the community with an event that the Los Angeles Times called ‘magnificently enlightening’. The San Diego Union-Tribune has called it ‘phenomenal’. Unfortunately, the event was canceled last year due to the pandemic. But, there is good news – the Festival is back this month and for the first time, it will be completely outdoors!

This year, the 17th annual Music Festival will be delivering live music from artists across the world. The Carlsbad Music Festival is a 501c(3) that was created to establish Carlsbad as a cultural center in Southern California. In the pursuit to find and recruit musicians who create compelling music for a diverse set of audiences, the Carlsbad Music Festival has quickly become a world-class gathering of performances that can’t be found anywhere else. Local music defines the culture of a community and the Carlsbad Music Festival is constantly on the lookout for new and emerging talent. It has grown to be one of the largest and most diverse gatherings of avant-garde musicians in the state. We couldn’t be happier that it will be live and in-person August 27th-29th.

This year’s event is being advertised as ‘adventurous music by the beach. The Festival will be taking all the precautions to keep visitors safe while providing best-in-class entertainment. You can purchase a General Admission 3-day pass for the low price of $49, or one-day passes starting at just $18. Performances will take place in multiple outdoor venues throughout the Village of Carlsbad and the hub will be located on the lawn at St. Michael’s by-the-Sea. There will be plenty of room to spread out as well as a playground for kids with shaded seating. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and beach chairs, as well as sunscreen and hats. Small dogs are allowed and visitors can bring outside food and non-alcoholic beverages. The outdoor Food Court and Beer Garden will provide all sorts of food and beverages for purchase and proceeds from bottled water sales will go directly back to the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that hosts the event.

On the stage, artists will range from acoustic to eclectic and everything in between. There will be indie music, jazz, strings, and brass. The Mattson 2, Amadou Fall, Shane Hall, and Art of Elan are just a few of the artists making appearances.

Throughout the past year, music has become a life force for many of us. We’ve gained a new appreciation for what it can bring to our lives, and now that the end of summer is near, it’s time to get outside and enjoy music in real life. Parking will be limited, so consider using alternate forms of transportation or carpooling. Tickets can be purchased here in advance.

Grab a ticket and tune in to the 17th Annual Carlsbad Music Festival – you’ll be glad you did.

When you hear the term ‘village’, what comes to mind? For many, the idea of a village includes a quaint idyllic cluster of stores and restaurants. Or, it’s a historic re-creation of cozy architecture and small storefronts. Quite literally, a village is a clustered human settlement or community. One that is smaller than a town but larger than a few small buildings. Historically, villages could also be a location where communal societies gathered. That could mean a community built with a church at its center or a group of individuals creating neighborhoods adjacent to the factories where they worked. Oftentimes, villages were thought of as rural locations – far from the hustle and bustle of the city. Now, there are urban villages that take place in the heart of urban neighborhoods. In the U.S., incorporated villages refer to a very select designation of governance, outweighed by the powers granted to cities but larger than undesignated areas. In Carlsbad, our Village doesn’t quite fit into the category of an incorporated entity but it still holds the heartbeat of the city and is one of the central places to see when you visit. The Carlsbad Village is the preeminent downtown of North County. It is a centerpiece of dining, shopping, and exploration graced by the beaches that frame its streets. Every year, the Carlsbad Village hosts locals and visitors alike for a weekend of activity, fun, and community at the Village Faire. While the event was postponed last year due the pandemic, the Carlsbad Village Faire is back this year and is right around the corner.

Over 40 Years Worth of Reasons to Celebrate at the Village Faire This Year

For over 39 years, downtown Carlsbad Village has hosted this event in May and November. Typically, the street fair will host hundreds of vendors – selling everything from clothes and art to plants and antiques. The expansive food court is transformed into a market of booths featuring cuisine from all over the world. With support from the Rotary Club of Carlsbad – the Village Faire has always been a celebratory event with beer gardens and wine stops for adults and plenty of activities for kids.

This year, the celebration is back in action. With vaccinations on the rise and summertime giving people the ability to get outside, the event is back on track. Normally in May, this year’s postponed event will be a bit warmer than usual. For one day only on July 25, 2021 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. – the largest street fair in Southern California will be opening its doors for everything from arts and crafts to food, drink and more. Vendors from all different cultures will be running booths with items from around the world. There will be a children’s play area with space to run around and games to keep everyone entertained. Slides, bounce houses, and a carnival are all in store – the perfect opportunity to burn off all of the sweets from the international food center.

And, The Kiwanis Club of Carlsbad will continue its more than 25-year tradition of hosting a pancake breakfast. The tasty breakfast includes all of the favorites – pancakes, coffee, sausage,  and juice will be served from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.

This year, the crowds will be slightly smaller than normal. Attendance will be capped at 4,000 attendees with approximately 50 food booths. There will be roving performers and local music throughout.

Grand Avenue from Carlsbad Boulevard to Jefferson Street, and all of the cross streets in between, will be closed for the event. Shuttles will run to and from the fair in order to reduce congestion and give guests more space to park.

Embrace Southern California’s favorite Village by the Sea and support your community at this year’s Carlsbad Village Faire.

Seeing your favorite band live is one of the most thrilling and uplifting things you can do. Turning on the radio in the morning or plugging in to your favorite streaming service is an escape from the noises of everyday life. Going to a live concert takes the experience from in between your ears to an all encompassing experience of community, rhythm, and celebration. Hearing music come to life in real time can create a source of energy that you can’t quite get on your own. Going to a live show can get your legs moving, generate a feeling of togetherness with other fans, and boost your overall mood. Carlsbad is home to a number of different live music venues. Sometimes, you can find the best music in the most unexpected places. Here are a few of Carlsbad’s favorite local joints to catch live music.

Seafire Restaurant & Bar

Music Spots in Calrsbad - Seafire

Seafire Restaurant & Bar is one of those places where you can feel comfortable no matter what time of day it is. Their casual atmosphere is complemented by over 40 beers on tap and they have a unique Mediterranean menu that sets it apart from typical restaurant/bar combos. Grilled octopus, local Carlsbad mussels, and saganaki are all on the menu.

Every Wednesday-Saturday, the adult beverages and wood fired grill are brought to life by a full lineup of live musicians. Grab a gyro, craft beer, and some friends and enjoy tunes from local artists like Sodie Orr, Craig Sherman, Free Fall Jazz, and The Senders. Music starts at 7:00 p.m. and ends at 10:00 p.m. on the outdoor patio.

The Landings at Carlsbad

Music Spots in Carlsbad - The Landings

The Landings at Carlsbad is a historic part of the city. The quaint eating hole and cocktail lounge was originally created to live above the pilot supply store in the 1950’s. Today, the area surrounding The Landings is made complete with new hangers and and an international terminal building. The restaurant has a Land and Sea motif, serving breakfast, lunch, happy-hour, and dinner.

The outdoor patio at The Landings sets the restaurant a tier above typical airport diners. Live music is featured every weekend. Guests can fly (or drive) in for a snack while jamming out to classic rock tribute bands. This month alone, The Landings are hosting Jim Gibson, the Come Together Beatles Tribute Band, Rolling Stones Tribute Band, and Tom Petty Tribute Band.

O’Sullivan’s

Music Spots in Carlsbad - O'Sullivans

O’Sullivan’s has been voted as San Diego’s Best Irish Pub for five years straight. The Carlsbad location is lined with brick walls, wood trimmings, and chandeliers. The pub has traditional Irish fayre, fireplaces, and fire rings on their dog-friendly patio.

O’Sullivans plays live Irish music on a weekly basis. Wednesday-Thursday, local artists grace the stage and bring the luck of the Irish to all of their fans. Artists like Highland Way, the Saul Wright Band, and Jamie O’Connor can all be found on the stage during the month of September.

Seeing live music doesn’t mean that you have to book a ticket at a large concert venue. Bring a hungry stomach and an ear for local talent to any of these locations and you can kick back, relax, and dance the night away.

Art and culture go hand-in-hand when shaping a community. Artistic expression is human expression, and the use of imagery, storytelling, and dance are all parts of the human experience that are important to the backbone of a community. The City of Carlsbad has always been invested in artistic expression and has served as a supportive force behind the artistic threads that bind the community together. The arts stimulate childhood brain development, and studies have shown that creativity breeds innovation. This month, appreciation of the arts is taking center stage in Carlsbad. The ArtWalk team is working together with local artists to host the 2nd Annual ArtWalk Carlsbad on Armada Drive, above the Flower Fields on Palomar Airport Road.

ArtWalk Carlsbad (2)

A Continuing Celebration of Art in Carlsbad

The Mission Federal Artwalk and Artwalk Liberty Station have celebrated visual and performing arts in San Diego for over 35 years. In 2018, Carlsbad hosted the first ArtWalk festival in North County. The 2018 kickoff festival featured over 200 artists, showcasing every medium of art imaginable. The immersive art experience was such a success that it is coming back for another year of live music, art, food, beverages, and more.

On September 21st and 22nd, Carlsbad Village and Amarda Drive will be home to hundreds of local artists. Guests will have the rare opportunity to purchase pieces that are completely unique to Carlsbad’s own. Price points will vary and artists will be able to highlight completed pieces and perform live demonstrations. There will be food vendors and a wine and beer garden so that guests can eat and drink while browsing the work. All artists must apply for a space at the festival, and only half of applicants will get accepted. The selection process includes a mixed criteria to ensure that the featured artists have a wide range of creativity, technique, and use of materials.

Interactive Events and Musical Performances

The two-day festival is family friendly. There will be a KidsWalk devoted entirely to hands-on activities for little ones who want to explore artistic expression. ArtReach San Diego will be hosting visual art education workshops, Hero City Arts & Crafts will be connecting pop culture and the arts at their Super Hero mask station, and Nature Buddies will be nurturing the parent/child bond with an activity for guests to create nature faces.

The headlining music artist at the festival will be A.J. Croce. He will be performing on Sunday afternoon and has been praised by some of music’s most esteemed artists like Willie Nelson. His New Orleans influences inspire a multi-instrumentalist mix of piano, vocals, and performance art.

Live chalk art an attraction at Artwalk Carlsbad 2019

Live Chalk Art

In addition to the vast selection of art, live music, food, and drinks, the 2019 ArtWalk Carlsbad will also be bringing back the popular Chalk Art that debuted at last year’s festival. The asphalt art will take place before guests’ eyes during the two day festival. Talented street painters will be grabbing from the ‘Maddonari’ artists in ancient Italy who created street art in front of churches. Expert artists will receive a $200 stipend for their work. Schools and youth groups are also encouraged to participate. Participating groups will get an assortment of chalk provided by Artist & Craftsman Supply. Chalk squares are all 8 feet by 6 feet. The road where the Chalk Art will take place will be transformed from a hard black surface to a winding and vibrant expanse of expression.

Grab your advance ticket for two days of art and fun – tickets include access to the festival, entry to the Museum of Making Music, and admission to A.J. Croce’s show.

There are playlists for every season of the year. Music defines history and marks important eras. It provides a backdrop for life’s big moments, little moments, and everything in between. Creating mixtapes in the 90’s, burning CDs for friends in the 2000s, and compiling playlists for iTunes have all been ways to personalize music to our everyday lives. Summertime is one the best times to incorporate music into vacations, pool days, evenings on the porch, and weekend barbeques. A day on the beach with a Bluetooth speaker is a day for the memory books. The City of Carlsbad has embraced music as a way to draw the community together and give neighbors a relaxing way to welcome the weekend. As summer rolls around each year, the City of Carlsbad puts on TGIF Concerts in the Park. These concerts are a great way to get outside and enjoy the long summer nights with live music performances, food, and fun.

The City has been hosting these live music events throughout the city for over 30 years. In the beginning, it was called Jazz in the Parks. Over the course of 25 years, the series has evolved and expanded, welcoming hundreds of bands and thousands of audience members. In the early years, Jazz in the Parks rotated locations regularly and was complemented by simple floor boards and minimal lighting. Now, the four largest parks in the city have become home to the summer music series. Stagecoach, Poinsettia, Calavera Hills and Alga Norte community parks each host a set of Fridays throughout the season. With more and more music lovers becoming interested in the Friday concerts, the music selection has grown from jazz to all different sorts of different genres. Now, soul, funk, and surf rock are all part of the lineup.

carlsbad concert in the parks

From late June through mid-August, the concerts are lined up at each of the open-air venues. Guests can spread out with a blanket, dance, and take part in all of the other offerings available at the park. There is a new band featured every weekend. The venues open at 4 p.m. and events get underway at 5 p.m. Bands go on from 6-8 p.m., which allows commuters plenty of time to get home from work before the festivities. All shows are outdoors and 100% free to attend.

Music is just the beginning of the Friday fun at each concert. Family Open Studios is at every event with hands-on art projects for the whole family. Food vendors are there to fill your stomach and complement the music. Bread and cheese, paella, burgers, pasta, pizza and tapas are all on the menu. There is on-site parking for audience members at each venue. If parking gets full, there are walkable options and shuttles so that people can get in and out with ease.

This year, there is one concert left at Stagecoach. Sully and the Souljahs will be performing the day after Independence Day. The Grammy award winning band will bring a touch of R&B, funk, soul and reggae to the park. After that, the Friday series will move to Poinsettia Park with bands like Pop Vinyl, and Urban Renewal Project. In August, the party moves to Calavera Hills Community Park with Rumba Y Soul and Unsteady. Alga Norte Community Park will round out the summer with Gene Evaro Jr., and 80z All Stars and Cassie B’s 90z Remix.

Grab a chair and your dancing shoes and don’t miss the TGIF Concerts in the Park this summer!

With the new year officially upon us, many of us are slowly easing back into the routines of the work week. Brushing off the remnants of holiday vacation can feel both burdensome and nostalgic. If you’re still hanging on to a vacation state of mind and are planning your next excuse to get out of the office, 2019 is a blank slate for figuring out where to spend your next getaway and Carlsbad should be at the top of your list. Even with winter nipping at our heels, the snow and ice flurries spread throughout the rest of the country make southern California a top runner for a sunny vacation year-round. Nestled just above the center of San Diego, Carlsbad has all of the key components that make up a perfect getaway destination. A vast coastline, bright blue skies, majestic cliffs, and some of the world’s most fresh and innovative dining experiences all lay the foundation for Carlsbad’s allure. However, there are a few well kept secrets that make Carlsbad truly unique. Here are five of the top off-of-the-beaten-path locations that make Carlsbad one of the best places to vacation in 2019, and to save on your next visit make sure to check out all our lodging offers:

Calavera Lake: Cave, Volcano, and Labyrinth

Caves and volcanoes are natural wonders located in some of the world’s more exotic locales. Surprisingly, you don’t have to travel overseas or spend lots of money on pricey tours to experience these wonders. The Calavera Lake is located on a large preserve with miles of hiking and biking trails. The lake itself expands over 400 acres and the reservoir and surrounding land were once home to an old rock quarry. The cave is part of an old mine, with obvious nods to the natural mineral that formed it. The volcano in question is none other than Mount Calavera, that, in reality is a volcanic plug. This plug is the last remaining piece of the inactive volcano – a hardened bit of magma in a vent of the once active mountain. In addition to the lake and volcano, a man-made labyrinth tops off the treasures of this preserve and make it a must-visit hidden treasure.

Carlsbad Mineral Spa

For those who prefer to be pampered by the minerals of the terrain, Carlsbad is well known for a its variety of resorts and spas. The Carlsbad Mineral Spa however, is a premier location for relaxation that has its foundation rooted deep in the history of the city. Back in 1882, Captain John Frazier drilled a well on his farm and uncovered that the water beneath the surface was similar to the healing spring waters found in Europe. The alkaline mineral water at the spa is touted as having special healing powers. Book an appointment at the Carlsbad Mineral Spa for a day of rest and relaxation that you can’t find anywhere else.

Craftsmanship Museum

San Diego is home to a long list of interesting and intriguing museums. If seeing a town through the eyes of historical relics and intellectual property is your thing, then Carlsbad is home to a couple truly unique museums. The Craftsmanship Museum brings out the joy and genius of handiwork throughout the centuries. The museum allows guests to see the inner workings of engines, instruments, and model cars while taking in the precise art that goes into each. Its brick and mortar location lets you get up close and personal with each piece and their online museum extends the experience by giving guests the freedom to take their time browsing through the artifacts.

Museum of Making Music

The city of Carlsbad is a blend of history and innovation. At the Museum of Making Music, the two combine in order to honor the relics of sound and embrace the new ways that musicians are creating art. Exhibits feature galleries of well and lesser known instruments. Live performances bring the exhibits to life, highlighting local artists and musicians with followings that reach beyond the city’s borders. Come see how instruments really do provide a soundtrack to our lives by exploring how music has shaped history and how it will play into the future at this Carlsbad gem.

Despite its name, Oktoberfest starts in September and ends in October. Known as the largest beer festival in the world, the original Oktoberfest originated in Munich, Germany and is held annually for 16 to 18 days from mid-September to the first weekend in October. The festival is typically held on fairgrounds, with multiple tents hosting thousands of people. For Bavarian culture, the festival is a treasured event that is ingrained in culture spanning back to the 1800s. Large amounts of Oktoberfest beer are consumed, and attractions such as rides and games accompany traditional food and live music.

oktoberfest carlsbad beer girls

During the 18th century, King Ludwig married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen (the ‘Crown Princess’). To celebrate their nuptials, the couple hosted a number of festivities leading up to a horse race. The celebration took place in a picturesque setting eventually named Theresa’s Meadow in honor of the princess. In the years following the wedding, the festivities were repeated annually to celebrate the anniversary of King Ludwig tying the knot. Over the years, Oktoberfest grew. Shows were added and entertainment compounded with the addition of bowling alleys, carnival booths, and playful live music. As it grew, city officials decided to officially make the celebration a yearly event. People embraced the joyous attractions and began showing up in Bavarian costumes native to the surrounding regions and townships. Eventually, traditions began to form and things like bratwurst and beer served in large glass mugs grabbed hold.

Today, Oktoberfest is still celebrated in Munich as well as in various cities throughout the world. Traditions may vary, but the core of the festivities are still intact wherever it is celebrated. The festival is a fun and raucous opportunity to enjoy Bavarian food, beer, and music with family and friends. This year, Carlsbad families can take part in the historic celebration at the 36th annual Oktoberfest & Family Fall Festival hosted by Carlsbad Rotary. The event is San Diego North County’s longest running Oktoberfest celebration, and the traditions of fun and amusement are well incorporated into Carlsbad’s version of the century old festivities.

Flashing icicles, inflatable reindeer, and snowflakes that transform the darkness of night into an exciting prelude to Santa’s arrival are a key part of the holiday tradition. To keep the tradition alive, here is a list of Carlsbad’s best homes that go all out when it comes to holiday lighting and decor. Pack the family into the car and drive by any of these locations to be awed by the twinkling lights and joy of the season.

7607 Romeria Street This home is known as “The Carlsbad Christmas House”. When you visit, you’ll want to get out of the car and explore the winter wonderland created by the lights, animated penguins, and characters like Snoopy and Santa. In addition to the decor, fake snow machines let Southern California natives the opportunity to put on their boots and catch a snowflake (or two) on their tongues.

Dec. 4-31, 5-9 pm.

6646 Elegant Tern Place Add magic to the season by stopping by Elegant Tern Place and letting your little ones drop off their wish list to Santa via Santa’s mailbox. Personalized letters will be returned to every child who delivers a note. This location also hosts a community event on Dec. 17th that features treats, crafts, and bubbles, to boot.

Dec. 3-25, 5-10 pm.

2329 Snead Drive If you’re looking for the ultimate display of lights in Carlsbad, Snead Drive will not disappoint. Walk into the garage to see a holiday village complete with everything from elves to a nativity. If you’re lucky, Santa will arrive from the sky in a hot air balloon.

Dec. 5-31, 5:30-9 pm.

There are plenty of festivities and entertainment to usher in a sense of merriment in Carlsbad this season. The holidays only come once a year, so keep this list handy to make sure that you are experiencing everything there is to offer between now and the New Year.
