Family road trips of yesteryear meant piling everyone – and everything – in the ole station wagon and driving cross-country for two weeks. And with no air conditioning!

That’s so passé!

Just come stay at one of the top-notch resorts and spas in Carlsbad, California, and you can forget about thousands of miles of hopping from motel to motel. Everything you want to enjoy is nearby!

Carlsbad’s location makes it the perfect vacation hub-city for daily, short road trips to some of the best vacation spots in Southern California – San Diego, Temecula and Los Angeles. Of course we can’t list all the awesome things you can do in these popular SoCal cities, but here are some top choices to help you narrow it down.

Carlsbad
Start out your stay with buying a park hopper pass and saving on entrances to LEGOLAND California, SEA LIFE Aquarium and LEGOLAND Water Park. Right now, you can buy 1 day and get 4 free! You don’t have to worry about wearing yourself out by trying to enjoy all of the rides, ocean adventures and splash zones in one short day – now you’ll have five for the same price.

Five gorgeous beaches, each with its own unique appeal, are just a few minutes’ drive from California’s best choices for theme parks and amusement parks in Carlsbad. Whatever you’re looking for – relaxation, swimming, SCUBA, surf, fishing – you’re sure to find a beach or two that meets your needs. As a bonus, a number of hotels are easily within walking distance.

Los Angeles
So much to see in the LA area – and all within an hour or two from Carlsbad. You can start with Disneyland and California Adventure in Anaheim. If that’s not your cup of tea, take the day to roam Rodeo Drive for some of California’s best shopping, or people watch in Venice Beach or Hollywood – you never know when you might run into your favorite star!

Or check out the theatre, music and museums all around LA. If you’re a foodie, experience dineL.A. Restaurant Week July 13 – 26. They have so many delectable choices, their ‘week’ is lengthened to 14 days!

No matter what you enjoy throughout the day, you’ll still have time to make it back to Carlsbad by bedtime to get all rested up for the next day!

San Diego
Just a 45-minute drive away is America’s Finest City – San Diego. You can enjoy the world-famous San Diego Zoo, Safari Park and Balboa Park – all definite must-sees. San Diego is quickly becoming a food mecca so be sure to sample the delicious local cuisine. Of course, San Diego is lined by some of the most gorgeous beaches that you can experience either by swimming, kayaking, windsurfing or by boat tour.

Having one of the largest concentrations of military in the nation, you can tour the historic USS Midway or awe-inspiring Fort Rosecrans – the Arlington of the West.

No matter what time you leave San Diego, you’ll still be back to Carlsbad to crawl into bed – amazed by everything you experienced that day.

Temecula
Less than an hour away are Southern California’s popular vineyards and wineries in Temecula. Many offer guided tours – including transportation – while you sip and sample your way through wine country.

For more family-friendly activities, Temecula has dozens of options for outdoor fun – horseback riding or biking. You can also get a bird’s eye view of the area by lifting up in a hot air balloon and checking out the sights from 5,000 feet.

There is so much to see and to experience in Southern California, but it’s always comforting to return to Carlsbad at the end of a long day. And if you time it right, you can catch the sun before it dips into the Pacific. Nothing is more calming than watching the sunset beachside, from your hotel room.

Nothing’s better, except for dreaming up what you’ll do the next day, touring around Southern California with an amazing vacation hub like Carlsbad, California!

There’s never a dull moment in Carlsbad. Especially in the summer. Whether you love splashing in the waves, engaging in exhilarating sports or spending adventurous days at LEGOLAND, you won’t run out of options in Carlsbad … all summer long.

LEGOLAND
Experience more than 60 interactive rides, shows and attractions along with 22,000 LEGO models, created from more than 57 million LEGO bricks. Plus, enjoy restaurants, shopping and beautiful landscaping features throughout LEGOLAND. Plan ahead to spend July 4th in the Park where the whole family can enjoy patriotic performances and traditional picnic games like water-balloon tosses, sack races and relays. Complete the evening with a spectacular fireworks display, making it a memorable holiday event for all involved.

LEGO Water Park
What an exhilarating way for the whole family to cool down on a hot summer day – at LEGO Water Park. All the excitement revolves around a 45-foot-tall tower, with giant LEGO friends splashing and spraying water. Get doused under splash tower, slip down thrilling water slides, float on a lazy river or lounge in comfortable cabanas. Sandy wading areas and special attractions for toddlers make it the perfect spot for the whole family.

SEA LIFE Aquarium
Spend the day discovering 200 species of sea creatures including sharks, rays, seahorses and clownfish at the SEA LIFE Aquarium. Touch a sea star or crab in the interactive rockpool, or learn SCUBA basics and interact with a diver through the glass. An exciting schedule of daily shows lets you watch live feedings and learn all about creatures’ diets, plus discover fascinating facts or join conservation campaigns. Perfect for families, schools, groups and even corporate events.

Skateboarding
Get ready to grind some rails at the Carlsbad Skatepark or Alga Norte Skatepark. Whether you’re a novice or an expert skater, the park has great lines and offers a mix of street and transitions. The park features wedges and banks, along with a pyramid and bowls to carve. Safety equipment – including helmets and pads – need to be worn at all times while skating. Even if you’re not a skater, come and check out the daring skaters as they hit sweet transitions and catch some air.

Surfing Lessons
Thrill the day away at SoCal Surf Lessons. You’re guaranteed to be up and riding in your first class or your next lesson is free. Personal instructors guide you through riding your first wave, ocean awareness, water safety and surf etiquette. Choose from 90-minute or 2-hour private lessons. Single and group packages available, plus surf camps. Surfboard and wetsuit provided.

Take a unique aerial tour over Carlsbad, California – it’s ‘the’ vacation hot spot on San Diego County’s scenic north shore. With seven miles of glorious beaches, Carlsbad features three natural lagoons, countless tide pools and offshore kelp beds – and that’s just for starters!

Step away from the water… and you will find abundant activities everywhere.

Great shopping centers for the latest fashions, family-friendly attractions and golf courses for every level of play.

A five-star destination resort and golf club, a fabulous destination resort and spa, and an impressive selection of other wonderful resorts and hotels.

Accommodations to fit every budget and a beachside campground. S’mores, anyone?

Foodies, take heart, Carlsbad has your taste buds covered. The Village has a delightful array of dining options. Mexican? Check. Italian? Check.  Sushi? Check. Fine dining? Check. Food Tours? Check. I think you get the idea – Carlsbad has cuisine choices to fit everyone’s palate.

If you’re looking for a great spot to people watch, check out the green at Historic Highway 101 – aka Carlsbad Blvd. – and Pine Ave. Plus, you can’t beat the splendid sunsets. Actually, you’ll catch magnificent sunsets wherever you may be in Carlsbad.

No matter what you enjoy doing, come to Carlsbad. You’re in for a treat of a lifetime!

What’s great about Carlsbad during the winter season is that you’re able to enjoy the great outdoors even at the chilliest temp (as chilly as Carlsbad can get). With an average high of 63 degrees during the winter months, Carlsbad provides the ideal setting for a brisk hike through some of the city’s most beautiful terrain, spanning 46 miles of trails. Here are my top five trails to hike during the winter (have to work off those scrumptious holiday meals!)

Hosp Grove Trails
Spanning 3 miles, the Hosp Grove Trails winds through an aromatic eucalyptus forest. Not only is the trail a reprieve away from the chaos of city life, it also offers a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean and the Buena Vista Lagoon. Fun fact: The scent from the eucalyptus plant can increase brain wave activity and your energy!

Aviara Trails
Take a peek at nature in action while hiking! One of the more extensive paths, the Aviara Trails stretches 6 miles and offers a variety of nature experiences to hikers. You’ll find migrating birds along the Batiquitos Lagoon trail that call this area ‘home’ during the winter months.

Hidden Canyon Trail
This relatively short trail (0.25 mi) is great for families with dogs! The Hidden Canyon Trail connects the dog park with the Hidden Canyon Community Park. Enjoy a picnic with the family after a brisk walk through. Just make sure to leash up Fido!

Calavera Hills Village H North Trail
Take a walk off the beaten path! Located north and east of Carlsbad Village Drive, the Calavera Hills Village H North Trail offers a walk through a eucalyptus grove while exploring the Village. Make sure you follow the posted signs as you walk through the public trail!

Sea Wall
A bit of a unique hiking trail, the Sea Wall lines Tamarack Beach and is perfect for those looking to walk along the beach. It extends from Carlsbad Village Drive to Cannon. I highly recommend walking along the trail during sunset. Watch as the glowing yellow sun dips into the Pacific Ocean!

Hope to see you on a trail!

Looking for a cool spot to enjoy the summer sun? Whether you are planning a family vacation with the kids, a romantic getaway for two, or an action-packed group adventure, Carlsbad has activities that make for an incredible trip. I’ve found some of the best attractions in the Village by the Sea to be enjoyed by all!

Terrific for Tots
Keep the kids entertained with activities that Mom and Dad will love too!  Just in time for summer, LEGOLAND has opened its highly anticipated LEGO CHIMA Water Park presented by Cartoon Network. Speed down water slides, float in the interactive wave pool, and even build your own boat out of LEGOs. Then head over to LEGOLAND’s Sea Life Aquarium to explore life under the sea.

For a kid-friendly dinner, stop by That Pizza Place, where the whole family can enjoy some of the best pizza in town in a casual, lively atmosphere.  Don’t forget to bring your quarters – That Pizza Place is almost as famous for its awesome arcade games as it is for its pizza!

Next, learn how to “hang ten” on the beach with surf lessons from So Cal Surf.  With friendly, knowledgeable instructors who put safety first, So Cal Surf Lessons help children and adults alike become skilled and confident surfers.

Cute for Couples
Make Skinsational Skin & Body Spa your first stop on your romantic rendezvous with your special someone. Located in the heart of Carlsbad Village, this luxurious spa offers 3 Couples Escape Packages to ensure some much-needed TLC. Each includes a soothing massage for two, champagne, and decadent chocolate truffles.

After you both feel refreshed and relaxed, enjoy an indulgent dinner at West Steakhouse & Seafood. Its intimate ambiance and unique gourmet dishes make it the ideal dining experience during your dreamy getaway.

Complete a perfect day with your sweetheart at New Village Arts Theater. This quaint venue in downtown Carlsbad features award-winning performers and incredible visual artists displaying work for sale. Reserve your seats now for The Full Monty the Musical, beginning its run on July 18th.

Great for Groups
For groups both large and small, there are plenty of activities in Carlsbad that will please your whole party. Craft beer enthusiasts will love Scavengers Beer & Adventure Tours, which guides beer lovers through Carlsbad’s best breweries. Join a public tour and make friends along the way, or schedule a private tour for your group.

Relax, Enjoy, Laugh and More at RELM Wine & Beer Bistro. Its menu features delicious bites that pair perfectly with beer and wine, making RELM a great spot to eat, drink and be merry. The cozy restaurant offers Sunday brunch from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm happy hour on weekdays from 3:00 – 7:00 pm.

Hosp Grove Trail – one of Carlsbad’s most extensive citywide trails – is perfect for an outdoor adventure with friends. Plan a picnic near the gorgeous view of the ocean, observe the wildlife, or hike your way through the beautiful eucalyptus trees.

Visit our Facebook page for a daily dose of things to do in Carlsbad!

Friends, residents, and visitors of Carlsbad, lend me your ears! With the start of summer comes a new way to enjoy your favorite music: listening live in the great outdoors. After a warm day in the Carlsbad summer sun, you’ll love cooling down in the evenings with music from local, national, and international performers – all while you feel that famous ocean breeze. Here’s where I’ll be shaking my tail feathers all summer long!

TGIF Concerts in the Parks
How could Fridays get any better? Starting on June 27th, a variety of bands will perform at one of Carlsbad’s gorgeous parks every Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Guests are encouraged to bring snacks, chairs, and blankets – but lively music ranging from swing to salsa will have you up and grooving before you know it.

A local favorite in its 29th season, TGIF Concerts in the Parks is a great way to get to know Carlsbad and its friendly residents. Each concert is free to all who wish to attend. Just don’t forget to bring your dancing shoes! Check out this year’s lineup.

Red, White and Boom! at LEGOLAND California
Visit LEGOLAND California for an Independence Day celebration you’ll never forget. “Red, White and Boom!” commemorates the 4th of July with stunning fireworks accompanied by patriotic music heard throughout the park starting at 8:30 pm. During the day, you can participate in holiday activities including a LEGO building competition, lawn games, a dance party, and more!

Friday Night Live
Like to be surrounded by music while you’re on the move? I have just the thing. Friday Night Live features weekly street performances in the heart of Carlsbad Village every Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Genre-spanning bands and musicians are positioned throughout the area, ready to entertain passers-by. So while you stroll through Carlsbad’s quaint boutiques, coffee houses, restaurants, and gift shops, you can enjoy eclectic tunes every step of the way.

Coyote Bar & Grill
Featuring gorgeous outdoor fire pits surrounded by comfy seating perfect for large groups, Coyote Bar & Grill is one of Carlsbad’s liveliest eateries. The restaurant hosts entertainment Wednesday through Sunday of every week, including karaoke, DJs and bands from a wide array of genres. And don’t forget about their rockin’ happy hour Tuesday – Friday 4:00-6:00 pm, and Mondays 4:00pm – close.

Café Panini
For a relaxing evening outdoors with some of Carlsbad’s best local bands, stop by Café Panini. Bob your head to great music while you sip on craft beer, stellar wines or some of the best coffee in town. Or show off what you’ve got during Open Mic Night on Wednesdays from 4:00-7:00pm. And the restaurant’s delicious breakfast and lunch dishes – made with organic, fair trade, and local ingredients – are served all day. New customers will even receive a free coffee if you register your name and email address on the website!

For more ways to enjoy the great outdoors in Carlsbad this summer, check out some of these activities or join us on Facebook.

Although the first official day of summer is this Saturday, it’s already feeling like the sunniest time of the year! I’m getting my summer plans in check by making sure to include all the activities that my beautiful city of Carlsbad has to offer. If you’re from out of town, there are some great deals for accommodations at some of my favorite places to stay in Carlsbad.

A Day on the Green
Love to hit the green? Treat yourself with a golf lesson from the Aviara Golf Club at Park Hyatt Aviara Resort! Designed by Arnold Palmer, the resort’s golf course is adjacent to Batiquitos Lagoon and is challenging, yet carefully designed to help protect the ecological habitat. Take advantage of the Aviara Golf Club Package, which includes:

  • Standard overnight accommodations
  • Two rounds of golf per night
  • Unlimited use of practice facilities
  • Complimentary overnight golf club storage

After an exhilarating day, head to The Argyle Steakhouse for some much-need fuel! With a breathtaking view of the 18th hole, The Argyle offers up an elegant, yet comfortable fine dining experience for anyone looking to relax.

Sun & Sand
Carlsbad offers up some of the best beach resorts in Southern California. One of my favorites is Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort, a boutique hotel with amazing views and beautiful, fully stocked rooms! Don’t forget to grab your swim trunks, bathing suits, and sand castle building tools! The resort is steps away from North Carlsbad Beach. Once you’ve mustered up an appetite, make sure to grab some grub at Las Olas Restaurant, one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in the area. Make sure to try out their carnitas tacos!

Make a Splash
More of a pool-loving family? No problem! The Omni La Costa Resort & Spa is offering a Splash & Stay package that includes:

  • Luxurious accommodations
  • Dinner for two adults (Bistro 65 or Diversions)
  • Kidtopia Kids Club (registration for 3 hours – two kids, including lunch or dinner)
  • Family S’More Making
  • Family Breakfast at Bistro 65
  • Kids Welcome Gift
  • And more!

And guess what? The LEGO Legends of Chima Water Park at LEGOLAND California is now open! My little birdies love the Lion Temple Wave Pool!

Adventures in Nature
For the more adventurous, I recommend the Safari Package at Sheraton Carlsbad. With over 2,600 wild and endangered animals from around the globe, the San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park is ideal for families large and small who are ready to explore and learn about animal conservation! This exclusive package features:

  • Deluxe accommodations
  • Two adult tickets for the San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park
  • Daily lunch “Grab & Go” from Marketplace Café

Or stop by the Agua Hedionda Lagoon & Discovery Center to get a hands-on experience exploring the lagoon habitat. The facility also features boating, skiing, wake boarding, sailing, wind surfing, and fishing!  Round out the day with a satisfying bite at Twenty/20 Grill & Wine Bar. You can’t beat the view of the Pacific coastline.

Whatever you do this summer, make sure to make a stop by my beautiful city!
