The phrase ‘April showers bring May flowers’ doesn’t usually apply to the sunny Carlsbad coast. This year, rainfall has already surpassed yearly averages for San Diego county. The soggy winter is putting plants on high alert, and our typically brown hills are covered in greenery. All things considered, it is shaping up to be a vibrant and colorful spring for our coast. With its official debut on March 20, springtime is launching with the perfect amount of wintertime weather to coincide with the 2019 opening of the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch. Dry off your raincoats and put your boots away, because the Flower Fields are now open, and you won’t want to miss out on any of the new and exciting activities planned for this year.
From now until May, the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch will be open for guests from near and far. The fields feature over 50 acres devoted solely to the ranunculus bulbs that the fields are known for. The unique flowers are a member of the buttercup family and are spectacularly displayed further than the eye can see. Visiting solely to experience the yearly bloom is reason enough to plan a trip, but the activities and events justify visiting multiple times per season. This year, the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch have a number of new events scheduled to add to the allure of the awe-inspiring bloom.
While the ranunculus flowers are the main attraction, the Flower Fields have much more to see and do. There is a sweet pea blossoms maze to keep the whole family active, and little ones can try their hands at educational attractions like mining for gemstones using sifting sand in water. Santa’s Playground is a new rendition of Santa’s Village from Lake Arrowhead. Fantastical playhouses like the ‘Doll House’ and ‘Crooked Treehouse’ are laid out with giant colorful mushrooms lining the paths. Classics like the American Flag of Flowers are back as well. The ‘flag’ is spread across a 300 by 170-foot hillside to pay tribute to the United States. The Historic Poinsettia Display is another unique attraction that draws special attention to the world’s best-selling potted plant. The greenhouse is filled with over 20 rare and unusual varieties of the plant in addition to hundreds of square feet of the beloved Ecke poinsettia. You can make sure that you won’t miss any of the attractions by purchasing a group tour with antique tractor wagon ride.
Included with admission to the grounds, the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch hosts special events during their open months. The best time to view the blooms is usually mid-March through mid-April. This season, there are multiple featured events on the calendar during these popular months. Kids Day is March 23rd. It includes a bounce house, face paintings, and bubbles, as well as pizza and snacks. On March 24th, the fields are hosting a Festival of Color. This festival celebrates the Hindu Holi festival and will feature music and food from Indian culture. Blues Day is March 31st, gathering various blues musicians from around the county for a jam session that will last all day. In April, events like Hey Sugar, Hello Cookie will spoil guests with sugar and the Canon Photography Workshop will give the guests the chance to experience the beauty of photographing the blooms during a macro photography workshop.
